WHAT in THE WORLD IS MY COCKATIEL DOING2007-11-24 17:25:47

He sits in the back of his cage with his back turned and starts to swing his tail feathers back and forth, back and forth real fast. He looks like he's exercising or something, but once he's done he make a loud chirp for a minute or so, as if to make some wonderful anouncement. What exactly is he doing??

Oh you're gonna love the answer to this one.he's masturbating. Seriously. I not only own two cockatiels (one of which is a male), but I work with animals (including parrots) for a living and so I can 100% assure you that is what he is doing. And that chirp at the end, well, it feels good so he chirps! hehe Peanut, my male cockatiel, will often twitter while he's mating with whatever inanimate object is in his cage and it's quite comical to think that he's just being "loud in bed" LOL

So what he's doing is completely natural and won't cause any harm to him. And honestly, it's better that he does it in the cage instead of on you.which I can tell you from first hand experience is rather disturbing LOL

Now I'm sure you're wondering."Ok, did I really want to know what he was doing now that I know?" lol ;)

hello and your bird might have something wrong with it. You might what to call the vet and tell him or you can see if your bird is doing better in a day and then if your bird is not then you can take it the the vet but if your bird is doing better give it love or go to the vet. ,My cockatiel does this a lot have been trying to find him a friend. From what I've read male or female companions are ok, I am looking for a male, as with a female babies are a handful to raise. If you decide to get him a mate please read up on the quarantine time, this allow them to get used to each other and you can see if they will get along without fighting. Your fortunate it is only in the back of his cage, mine is out of the cage when I am home, anything, pillows, corners, anything with a point is the object of his affection at the time. Good Luck in finding him a friend.I have two friends lined up for him, but must wait for a neutral cage. Again good luck.

Follow some of these things I have found, I have tamed to many just alot of patience and love and quiet moments with the bird.
