We have 2 Parakeet male and female Why wont they make babies2007-11-24 17:25:05

we have put nest in but still no babies.

birds are funny they mate for life . are you sure you have a male and female.? there is an easy way of telling if you look under their tail there is a difference the male will have a solid coloring of the feathers and the female will have white spots . if you are sure that they are male and female and you have no eggs. A.. they might not like each other that way birds are picky about their mates that is why they mate for life. B. if you have seen them mating and some birds are not shy most of them do not even use the nesting box it takes awhile for them to even get used to it being in their cage. try removing the box and put a box of nesting string (this box hangs on the side and can be purchased at a pet store ..just ask for nesting string they will know).C if you know they have mated and it has been 21 days and still no eggs she can be what is called egg bound. simple solution place her in a shallow bowl( sguare glad plastic ware should do the trick ) with luke warm water with a little baby oil. ..There are a lot of different factors that could be the issue age for instance as well female birds tend to not produce eggs until the are 18 months to 2 yrs they have to mature just like every living breathing being . when all else fails seperate them in two different cages in opposite sides of the room. absence makes the heart grow fonder provided this birds are even old enough to due what you are asking of them.

maybe there aren't old enough yet .. the parakeet that my daughter had was about 4 years old before she layed a egg..

try a nesting box, you may have better luck if they have more privacy

Did you put a "nest" in the cage or a nest box? Parakeets need privacy that only a wood nest box will provide them. Attach it to the outside of the cage with an opening in the bars so they can go in to do what you want them to do. Parakeets will breed when they are about 6 months old. Be patient. It will happen. They are like rabbits when they get started. But you have to give them a certain amount of privacy to start.
