We have a few free-roam hens for laying-- the one rooster is attacking more often-- what can we do2007-11-24 17:16:31
can a rooster's spurs be trimmed? is he even necessary for our laying hens?
Answers:Yes, a rooster's spurs can be trimmed. Second he is only necessary for the laying hens if you want to be able to hatch the eggs that are being laid. The rooster is only protecting his flock. If you are going to catch him, it is best to do it at night. And don't trim too much of his spurs, just enough to blunt them.
more hens should keep him happy.
No he is not necessary, eat him.
If the hens are already laying, I'd say get rid of him... I had the meanest rooster...they suck!! Not worth keeping around. The hens will continue to lay IF they are laying already.
The rooster is not necessary unless you want fertile eggs. I usually end up eating the rooster because we just eat the eggs and buy new chicks when the hens get old. It is not worth the hassle to mess with his spurs.
