What Species of Cockatoos Can Bite off/ Break My Fingers
Please list the species, Im trying to find a larger bird. I wanted a Macaw, but after hearing about how dangerous they are...Ive decided a cockatoo would be better. I want one smaller than an Umbrella, considering the horror stories Ive heard. I went on mytoos.com, so please dont nag about it. Thanks! <3 Rennn
Answers:any large member of the parrot family can have horrific bite strength. If this is something you are worried about, you may want to cosider a smaller species like an amazon or quaker, or an eclectus (which you can tell the sex of by the color-females are red, males are green...these guys are still pretty large though, and can have a painful bite) or even a ring-necked parakeet. these birds still have an incredibly strong bite, enough to break human skin, but once you think about it, it isnt too suprising. these birds are designed to get through the tough rinds of tropical fruits like papayas and melons. They use their beaks as a tool for climbing and gripping as well. Even little cockatiels can have a very painful bite, and break skin. Due to the construction of a parrot's beak, it has incredible strength, and can inflict a suprising amount of pain. The occasional bite is something that you are going to have to be prepared to live with if you choose to own a parrot.
On top of this, you are going to have to be willing to put up with the constant cleaning, and the noise. (Trust me, parrots are extremely messy, and very loud!) A parrot of any sort is very easy to mess up. They are clever, and can pick up bad habits, and neurotic behavior very easily without propper space and stimulation. (a bird's cage should be wide enough for the bird to FLY across, not just jump from perch to perch). This is a very common problem for birds. They are very rarely given even close to the propper amount of space that they need in order to live comfortably. Preferably, a bird the size of a cockatoo would need at least a four by five foot area.
