What are bird mites, and how do I erradicate them from my appartment2007-11-24 17:25:35Answers:

There are several different types of mites found on birds.I'm assuming you have a pet bird that's infested with these. Some are red and come out only at night..sucking the blood of the bird. They live in the perches and accessories by day. Feather mites live on the bird, and can be treated with a mite powder or spray (keep away from eyes) find these in a pet store. There is a topical liquid you can send for in bird supply catalogs, or buy in a vets office..just make sure it is cut specifically for birds. It is called Ivermectin and an avian vet will have it.

It is important to treat the bird, or they will just keep multiplying and returning. You can use an exterminator for the apartment..just tell them you have pets and need a pet safe product used. Or you can go to a pet supply place like Pet Smart and ask for a product to use on carpets, cloth furniture and any cloth such as curtains. You will virtually have to take everything apart in your home, check all with a magnifying glass to see where they are and to treat them.Best wishes..and check out every site you can find by Google search. .the more info, the better.

bird mites are very tiny bugs. i dunno about how to get them off pet birds, but i know in chicken houses, you can put cedar limbs around. try putting some cedar shavings around over the floor and leave a few days. this should rid you of them.

The problem with most common bird mites is they also live on mice and rats, dogs and cats, and yes us. If you don't have a baby in the house 5% seven dust will catch them in the carpet. You want to treat twice to catch any hatching later. A bird mite spray available at the pet store on furniture and curtains will help. Also spray your shoes and welcome mats. If you are being bitten a insect repellent containing DEET at the waist arm openings, backs of knees, and all over your shoes and socks will help. Don't scratch! Good luck!

If you have a bird and thats how you have bird mites, i would ask a vet if any repellent is okay. Birds are very sensitive to alot of things that people would consider harmless. If you go to a garden store and ask for some Diatomacious Earth, its pulverized sea shells that if you sprinkle on your carpet and on any cracks in the walls or doors and then vaccume it up that should work. its safe for all animals. you can even rub it on your cats and dogs and it will suffocate the insects. it feels like baby powder to the touch. but make sure it doesnt have anything else in it. otherwise it might not be safe.
