OK well of course THE VET!

Not only because of the injury but also because the break can cause other problems and may be a sign of another health issue..if caught early can be the difference between life and death later in birds.

Having said all of that if you cant afford the VET.. ( most take payments)

Call the VET.. try a few and tell them you cant afford it and what to do. you may find one who will treat pro bono ( free)

or they may know of a rescue center or rehabber who could treat it or help you.. also try local University or colleges contact professors of Avian sciences, Vet programs etc.. Oftent hey will treat for free if you let students observe .

DONT let a student trreat youyr bird unless you KNOW they are qualified.

Its important that this leg heals peoperly.. birds need the legs ..both of them to do everything..

IF none of that works then You are going to have to figure out how to ahndle it yourself.

I cant recomment this and advise against it. the bandaging of the leg if not done correctly.. well can ruin the leg forever. Birds bones are very different from ours.

If you're unable to pay for vet expenses, and are certain that it's broken toward the center of the leg, you can splint the leg with a toothpick and "gauztape" (available at drug stores), or something similar, which only sticks to itself.

As others have said, take your budgie to a vet. A normal checkup is usually $70-$100 (US), and you can call ahead and ask how much the vet thinks a broken leg will be. If you can't pay it all at once, ask about payment plans. If you can't do that either, describe the injury over the phone and ask for advice on how to self-treat it.

There's nothing you can do to treat it yourself. It needs medical care if the leg is broken. If you try to do it yourself, there's a good chance you'll interfere with the normal circulation of the leg and cause your bird to lose it forever.

Just FYI..about 75-80% of budgies brought to us for 'broken legs' end up not having a broken leg at all. Renal tumors and testicular tumors inside the abdomen (which are exceedingly common in this particular avian species) often grow and press on the nerve that goes to the leg, causing it to dangle and 'look' broken.
