What can we do about a bald canary

What can we do about a bald canary2007-11-24 17:17:02

We used to have just one canary, a male who sang very well. We received a pretty female canary as a gift and put it in the cage with the male. The male stopped singing so often. She started making a nest and depositing eggs. After about five or six weeks she pushed the eggs out of the nest as well as all the newspaper she shredded. After the third batch of eggs she started loosing the feathers on her head. THe eggs have never hatched, but she sat on them and the male brought her food.

They are seperated again, but her feathers are still dropping and she does look funny being mostly bald down to the start of her neck.

What can we do?

Answers:

If the birds mate is causing the problem, separate them for awhile. The important thing is to see how quickly the feathers grow back. A poor diet equals poor keratin generation, sun light is very important in this area as well. Vitamin D. Calcium is a big issue for the female. Egg shells production robs the female of vital minerals. Be sure to offer calcium enhanced treats, not just a cuttle bone. Even small amounts of high quality fruit/vegetable juices diluted with bottled water offered through-out the week in small amounts is not bad.

shes stressed out about something birds pull there feathers out when they get stressed
Birds moult.
Either separate 'em, take them to a bird vet or charge admission!
Give her Rogaine
It might have been the male plucking her feathers. My finches did exactly the same thing and it didn't stop until they were separated. I'm familiar with bird behavior but I'm not sure why this happens.

Is there a possibility that the female has some sort of skin infection? There could be mites or mange or something.

You could also try using some spray on skin and feather conditioner that you can buy at pet stores. This might help.

If it persists, see a vet!

Hope this helps.

Alright, I don't know much about canary's, but I do own a Macaw. I did some research before we got him, i found that baldness could have something to do with their diet (if u feed a macaw WAY too much peanuts, it will start losing feathers)

so did u change your birds' diet?
