What diseases do Blackbirds suffer from2007-11-24 17:25:40

Some Blackbirds in my garden appear begraggled, have white patches of feathers or even bare patches of skin. They still visit the bird table and seem to be otherwise OK.

Are you in the British Isles, Lizbeth. If so you are describing a fairly normal feature of blackbirds. They 'moult' their feathers about now and can look worse for wear.

Blackbirds, like most birds, are normally very healthy and do not suffer from any specific diseases.

Birds molt every year. This is when they lose patches of feathers while new ones are growing in(they look pretty ratty when going through this phase). The Blackbirds are just getting their pretty new jackets. Don't worry about them unless some start dieing. hi do not be concerned all birds have a annual moult and i believe this is what you are witnessing,to confuse you more you might also have first and second round young blackbirds in your garden who will be in different stages of undress(moulting).
