A female hawk is a hen, the male is a tiercel and the young is called eyas. A group of hawks is referred to as aerie, cast or kettle.

I agree with all he said^ well' cept for one part. While most people 'consider' a sparrowhawk to be in the hawk family ..in actuality theyre not. They are the smallest bird of prey in the falcon class.
tiercel, i belive it's meaning is due to the male being a third smaller than the female.
sparrowhawks = kestrel, the smallest of the falcons.
