What is the next step in caring for love birds whos laid an egg in cage2007-11-24 17:26:28

can i touch the egg? clean cage as normal?special foods for baby? I'm a new mother. smile 4 me

Do u have a pair of lovebirds?

Hopefully your cage is a good size, length ways more than height.

Is the egg fertile?

Do u have a nest box in the cage?

What is the egg sitting in?

In other words what is on the bottom of the cage floor? hay? paper? a towel?maybe.

If it is on a flat surface i doubt it will stay intact for very long, hard to say. How long since she laid her egg?

If there is nothing under the egg but paper, buy a cane basket or bowl like the shape of a breakfast bowl, line the nest with material, to start off with, the hen will do the rest, provide nesting material from the pet shop. peg it to the side of the cage for her to pick from, if the nest suits her she will build fit furthur. She may like privacy, so a nest box will do better or a large nesting basket.

You can (its alright) place the egg onto this prepared nest site, see what happens from there.

I breed lovebirds, i am always touching their eggs and opening their nest boxes etc, holding their young chicks, there has never been a problem with rejection.

Also remember to feed nutritious food, vegies, spinach fresh corn, mung beans, multigrain bread, hard boiled eggs (mashed), Cooked Pasta Rice etc.

I think you should read some books. I would not touch the egg for a week because if it is fertile then when you hold it to the light you will see veins running through it. Put it back in the place you found it after you check. If there is no veins just toss in garbage.Best of luck to you.
