What small parrot best adjusts to cooler temperatures2007-11-24 17:26:34

My canaries seem to do better than my parrakeets when the weather gets cool and the heat is not yet on.

I think buying a heated perch is the way to go for my keets, but I'd like to know which of the small parrots are the hardiest in cooler temps. Thanks.

The Quaker is hardiest in cold temperatures, but that's the reason that it's restricted or illegal in most states. Quakers are loud and sassy, and many of them are abandoned by people who didn't research them before they brought them home, so now wild flocks of them are living even in places as cold as Boston, and man can they ever be destructive.

Poor babies. It would have killed me if someone came to our door and tried to euthanize our Quaker (and it's legal!)

Other than that, it's said that aviary birds can live hardily in a climate over 40 degrees, once properly acclimated. If not acclimated, pretty slight fluctuations in temperature can have adverse effects on a parrot's health. My pampered birdies live at 72 degrees all year.

There's a flock of wild Quaker Parrots wild in New England, maybe New York. They can survive the winters out doors if given time to acclimate to the cold. Aparently a pair escaped or was released and now there's a swarm of the mean little buggers!

I used to work for an avian veternarian and we told our clients that the birds will do OK within 10 degrees of your normal house temperature.as long as it's done gradually. So if your house is normally 70 degrees, it would not be wise to go below 60 degrees, though ideally, the birds should stay in a room that is around 70 degrees or so.
