What to do about a sick bird
There's been this bird hanging out in front of my dorm room all day, and it looks kinda sickly. It has a band around it's leg, so I think it might be special. I tried to call a couple of vet clinics, but no one answered, although several left emergency contact numbers. What should I do? Does it qualify as an emergency? It's below freezing outside, and raining outside. Should I try to bring it in?
Answers:Most importantly, (although it is very frightening for them) I would strongly suggest wearing gloves and using a towel to handle him. Get him warm immediately. If it has a band around its leg, then it is special. It is someone's pet who is probably lost, cold, and going to die if you don'ty help it immediately. Take a towel, double one end of it, and pick the bird up (gently) being sure to hold its head steady. Get it to a Humane Society or vet's office and explain your situation as quickly as possible. If it is below freezing outside and raining. This bird is going to die, if he isn't dying already. I wouldn't suggest trying to help it on your own. He definitely needs to be checked by an avian board certified vet, and if there isn't one, at least take him to a regular vet so they can get him where he needs to be before you look out your dorm and see a dead bird.

I would contact the wildlife agency in your area or animal control since it is banded.
Could be a pet alot of parrots and other birds are sold with bands on their legs.

Don't! It might carry a type of disease or virus. Definitely not a good idea. Leave it outside and call an emergency vet clinic. Do not make contact with the bird since there is still the bird flu going around.
use gloves if you bring the bird in. put it in a big box. the band could be a tracking marker-for like pigeons. most vets don't treat wild birds. A Local DEPARTMENT OF FISH AND GAME- may be able to help you. look in the phone book.
