What to do when I go to college
We have an african grey parrot and I am his favorite person. Right now he is going through his terrible twos. I am going away to college next year. Will my leaving change his feelings towards me or will it make him sad?
Answers:Although some schools allow some kinds of pets you will be busy and very probably not able to meet his needs as a college freshman.
Not a popular answer- but in the best interest of your bird I would recommend you and your family work on making sure he is comfortable and accepting of other family members and allow the possibility of someone else in the family becoming "the favorite". While you are gone his feeling may change.
Parrots can grieve and Grey's are sensitive anyway. I've always considered the best gift I can give my birds is to socialize them so when something happens to me they can be happy in a new home.
He will probally be sad, but maybe talk to him on the phone or go visit him.
Yes birds do grieve, and yes his feelings will change toward you - Dr. Pepperberg used to be bitten by Alex when she returned from the conferences and speaking tours she attended. You might enjoy reading her articles and Alex.
I'd take him with you. You probably can't have him in the dorm or in an on campus apartment building, but you can rent apartments that allow pets, thats what I would do.
