What to do with a Mourning Dove with a broken wing2007-11-24 17:26:36

We found one and I won't kill it I want to know what todo We put a splint onit with ducktape around it and gave it some bird seed. Part of it's wing is snapped in half which You can really only see close up but it's out of shock I found it lying on it's back and I thougt it was dead then went back to take a look and saw it breathing so we have a cardboard box with bird seed in a dish and some water in a dish in there.

If you don't have money for a vet.Call your local Wildlife Rescue Center.They will help you for FREE. They are specially trained to help injured wild animals and Birds.They will do anything possible to save the birds life.

take it to the vet. it may heal but not able to fly, in which case u may let it live with u. a family friend of mine had a crow with this problem they looked after for seven years.

It will need to see a vet. A wing cannot heal properly unless the vet sets it after x rays. It will not be able to fly if it does not heal properly and then it won't be able to be re-released into the wild. Birds go into shock an die quickly so you may not have much time.

Also, keep in mind that per Federal law it is illegal for you to possess a native wild bird species. I am pretty sure that mourning doves are a native wild bird species which means that only a licensed wildlife rehabilitator would be allowed to keep it. If it were a common pigeon which is NOT native to this country but introduced from Europe, you could keep it legally. I would call your local game commission, veterinary office, check phone listings, etc, to find a licensed wildlife rehabilitator in your area. This is best for all involved.
