What to feed an injured wild duck2007-11-24 17:26:37

There is a duck in the pond at my college who didn't migrate with the rest of the ducks-he has different coloring for one thing, and also his beak is broken, both on top and on bottom. He can still eat, but I'm worried that he can't find enough to eat as winter approaches. I've fed him seom white bread and whole grain rolls, but I don't know if this is the best thing for him. Does anyone have experience with (wild) ducks eating needs?

Answers:

Bread is not good for them, it has no nutritional value. He may be able to easily eat corn cereal such as Kix. Or go to a bulk pet food or feed store and see if they have something for it.

I'd try to fatten it up, too. Break out the Wok and the teriakyi sauce!
bread, lettuce, cabbage,i feed my mallard chopped up corn that comes from a farm store or grainery.
First of all let your fingers do the walking, see if you can find a Feed Store in your area. Call and see if the have dried corn. Bread really isn't good for ducks at all.

I live in a rual area in Northern Ca. and we have ducks here all winter.

Might be a good idea to contact Animal Control and see about getting the Duck some help. Animal Control might not be able to do anything for the Duck, however they might put you in touch with someone who can. Good Luck

Wild ducks eat cracked corn, oatmeal (dry), boiled eggs(mashed) I would boil two eggs at a time until they are hard. Mash them really well and mix some dry Oatmeal in it. Give the duck , Plenty of Water. If his beaks are broken they can survive that way. They learn to eat with their handicap. If you turn the duck over to Animal control, they might destroy the duck. When you observe the duck getting frisky, then try to enter him back into his pond area. Only do it when you observe other ducks near the pond. He will be so happy to join his group. I have fed many ducks and when they are so young, that is what we fed them. They have a great will to survive, so the sooner you release the duck the better. If the duck is really young, then continue to feed him for a while and then release him. Thanks for being so good to a duck. You are a good person.
Buy some corn at a local Grain Store. Or buy some duck or chicken food. Wild ducks in the river by my home love the stuff.
Please! Call a wildlife rescue organization in your area or if your college has a School of Veterinarian Medicine, call them.
