What would make diamond doves abandon their eggs
They've laid eggs twice; but the female, who goes broody before she lays the eggs, sits on the nest and that, but as soon as she lays the eggs, neither dove sits on their nest anymore. Why would they do this?
Thanks!
Answers:I've bred many diamond and peaceful doves, and the one thing that would stop them incubating was rats and mice crawling over the perches at night time. A big rat will try to eat a dove, so they leave the nest at night and realize that its not safe to return or that their cold eggs wont hatch.
I concreted my aviary floor and double meshed the whole thing, and they still managed to find there way in and and eat around 60 finches, doves and parrots in about a 3 week period.
Also, their nests are really flimsy, and sometimes I would wire them into place or build them up a bit with more nesting material.
Try setting up some rat baits to reduce the numbers of mice and rats.
perhaps it has the sent of another animal?
if a human touches them she wont know wihich ones they are
