Whats the best pet duck breed for my situation2007-11-24 17:17:38

I am looking for a duck as a pet. I want to make sure I have at least an adequate environment for it.

My situation:

*I have small smooth white rocks in my backyard (no grass now, but if i need to i can probly plant a 2x15ft patch)

*I have a lagoon so the duck will have plenty of water to swim (with no predators in the water)

*i would need the duck to be caged at night because of stray cats and whatnot (and my dad said so)

With the duck:

*It has to be a quieter breed

*The smaller the better, I don't know how big of a coop/cage/whatever i'll be allowed to make

*and i will probably keep it solo but it will have attention

I want to make sure that my situation wont make it cruel for the duck to live there. Will it be bad for the duck to walk on the stone all the time?

Answers:

Your duck needs company - you only need one other duck to go with it, but they are flock animals and they do need company in the form of another duck.

As for breed, a lot of duck breeds come in bantam form. My main bit of advice for that is avoid call ducks, because they are surprisingly noisy for their size.

you definately need some grass, i suggest a pekin duck they are excellent in training and very cool dont forget to clip wings. GL
