Answers:Depending where you live. If you are on the eastern part of the USA it could be a Eastern Towhee. This bird is solid black on it's head & back and like you said it has brown and white chest. I was looking in my bird book The towhee is often called a ground robin. There is a spotted Towhee but it is mainly West. The spotted towhee is solid black on the head but the back is spotted black and spotted white white & brown underneath.
There is a chickadee that has brown but not white a bit of black on the head but not the back. Most chickadees are the same size of a sparrow.
