I am training my cockatiel(male) he can't fly, he is a very friendly bird. I jsut thught him the step up command, what should I do next?

What would you like her to do? You can really teach her anything you can think up.

A natural thing at this time would be to "Step Back" onto her perch when she is on your finger. Simply back her to the perch and get her onto the perch. Praise her wildly and she gets a treat. Step back-praise-treat-repeat!

He'll get it.

Another natural building from the step up "Cue" (It's called a cue.it's a little nicer that way.) is the "High Four".

since birds only have 4 toes, they can't high five, so they "High Four".

Make an indication that you want her to step up. Instead of having him do that, simply brush your finger under his foot, and immediately praise him wildly! Goood bird! Great Job! treat him with what he loves best.

High four! praise-treat-repeat. 5 or 6 times per session ought to do it if He's up to it. If not, quit earlier. If He wants more, by all means, have at it.

A turn-around is fun too. Get him on his perch on a play stand where you can get your hand or arm circling around the perch.

Hold the treat in your hand, get his attention and get him to follow your hand with the treat circling on the perch. When he completes a 360 degree turn, praise immediately, treat and keep praising while he is eating. Gradually phase out the arm around the perch,and bring in a circling motion with your finger and you have it. Eventually. all you have to do is make a circling motion with your finger, and he'll do it.
