Whats wrong with my birds foot2007-11-24 17:26:15

I just got my jenday conure a few days ago and at times, he favors his left foot and bites at it. Sometimes he balances on the other one and opens and closes the left one. Do birds get foot cramps? He doesn't have any problems perching with it, but I wanted to make sure it was nothing serious.

Yes, birds can get foot cramps. If you bird only has one perch or all perches of the same type and diameter he could be getting foot cramps. Make sure he has several perches of different diameters and materials. Remember your bird is on his feet 24/7! He never gets to sit or lie down like you do and he needs to be able to change his foot position. It would still be a good idea to take him to a vet to be sure. You'll have to take him to a vet if you see redness, swelling, signs of infection, or he stops bearing weight on that foot or it continues to get worse.

does ur bird have a lil round metal looking thing in that foot?if it does thats wat it is cuz my cockatiel used to do that and it was that metal thing on her foot

I own 14 pairakeets. It's nothing serious.

Unless it starts getting red and puffy. Then you might want to take it to the vet.

If you think it's really harzorous, then just take it for a check up!

i would take him to a vet just to be safe do you provide him with different width perches all my birds have got natural perche in that have been cut from safe trees

What you are defining sounds like normal bird behavior. Birds often perch on one foot while they preen the other foot and groom their nails. They have a favorite foot to stand on usually. And of course, they stand on one foot when they sleep.
