Whats wrong with my budgie : ( :(
I am taking my budgie, "Molly" to the vet today. He is not an avian vet so I am not sure what will happen. Nearest avian vet is 130 miles away. Last night she was fine I think, moving around and kissing me. This morning she has to use her beak to help her move around her food dish where she usually perchs herself. And she has no problem with me putting my hand around her. She usually pecks at me a little but today she is not scared at all.
Any ideas would be nice. I have been crying since this morning. She is getting old, around 7-8 years old.
Thank you.
Answers:That's hard. I'm sorry. Even though your vet isn't an avian vet, he does know how to test droppings and saliva for bacteria or viruses, and how to analyze blood, so Molly is in the best hands she can be in right now. It does sound like she's just getting old.
There are special shelves and tents that people can buy to comfort their old birds, so they don't have to stand on their feet all day and they have somewhere warm to nestle into for a nap. Molly would probably really appreciate some. There are fuzzy little hanging, triangular tents that she can climb into, or fuzzy mitts that you can tie onto the bars by her perch, like a buddy. The shelves are usually metal bar or clear acrylic, and you snap them inside of the cage, so the bird can lay down when she's tired. You can find some examples at Drs. Foster and Smith.com for birds, and once you know the names, you can find them at almost any pet store. Give her some scrambled egg every few mornings, too. They help keep birds strong. Just make sure you take them away before an hour has passed, or they'll get bacterial.
Molly sounds like she's getting old, but I had a parakeet that lived to be 12 so it's hard to say if it is old age. Usually a vet that deals with dogs and cats don't have a lot of avian/reptilian experience(I found that out the hard way!) so hopefully they can dirrect you to a vet that can help if they can't. I would drive the 130 miles personally. Is she puffed up? If not, that's good. Puffiness is usually the sign of death. I would just see what happens, keep her warm and she knows you love her. If only all budgies could be as lucky as Molly! ;)
Hey, im sorry to hear about your budgie, hopefully the vet wil have some idea, even though he is not an avian vet.
