Whats wrong with my cockatiel2007-11-24 17:17:39
I've had my cockatiel for 3 years now and haven't experienced any problems with him until a day ago. He is paired with a female and they've been cagemates for 2 years. He has like a "wet" look to his head and around his eyes, I took him out and noticed that it was like a sticky maybe discharge, I'm not sure. He hasn't been active and he's been using his claws to scratch at it. What could this be??
Answers:Your bird may have "sour crop syndrome", which is a bacterial infection of the digestive system. If the discharge is of a yellowish colour and staining the feathers, then it may well be.Which case you will need to take your bird to a vet.
It must be some type of infection & him scratching it is a sign to you that it's bothering him. You need to take him to a vet.
Well, discharge can occur when they're is stress. The female doesn't necessarily have to do with it. The discharge from the eyes can be a a respiratory infection. Normal healthy cockatiel will have clean nostril, eyes, ear or beak. If you found that your cockatiel have some discharge for example got some discharge from their nose, this indicate that they are sick .He's scratching it because it bothers him. Respiratory problems can occur when there is too much ammonia in the air, when the surrounding air is full of dust, the bird can have pnomnia, due to drafts, and they're not getting enouh vit. c.
His mate have pecked him too hard. Look at him closer and try to find the spot where this sticky stuff comes from. I would give him a warm shower with a clean unused spray bottle. Be sure no chemicals were ever in that spray bottle, and do not let him get a draft. keep the temp. about 80 degrees in the room. After you have thoughly washed him, you may want to blow dry him with a hair dryer. Being careful not to blow into his eyes or ears. You could just blow into the cage beside where he is and not onto him. Seperate him from his mate, for a while. He may get very upset by this but it is important he rest. Keep his mate where he can see her, and cover up both cages under one cover, but far enough apart she can't peck at him. 2" probably. If he doesn't seem to perk up, or is not eating, you may have to call a vet. Good Luck.
The sticky stuff is a discharge from the nostrils just above his beak- get him to a vet, he most likely has a lung infection and needs antibiotics and will need to be kept alone in a "quiet room and warm area"---get to vet ASAP. Birds succumb to pneumonia very quickly and is the #1 cause of death..good luck with your buddy!
my cockatiel had an eye sore and given some bird eyedrops. i think you should check with the vet or bird shop keeper. my cockatiels eye got well but weirdly he fell sick and died.
Your bird is really sick. Discharge for the nose or eyes is very bad. He needs to go to a vet as soon as possible. You should call your vet to to see if there is anything you can give him.
