Whats wrong with my parakeet

Yesterday my son noticed my Male Parakeets beak looked dry and a small piece broke off. We've had him and his mate for over 2 yrs. They are healthy in color, eat like pigs, I put a dish of bird gravelin the cage and I give them treats occasionally, they also have a cuttle bone in thier cage. Am I missing something in thier diet? I usually give them regular parakeet food. I tried giving them a special blend of food but they only ate the seeds and not the extras. I give them vitamins also. Could it be his age or is there something I can buy that will help him? The females beak is fine. His beak doesn't keep him from singing and chattering all the time.

Your cuttle bone is good calcium support. You really need to work on getting a little wider diet going. Try take SMALL amounts of dehydrated fruits and veggies crushed into very small pieces. mixed with food. It may be moist veggies/fruits are just too 'different' for him to get started on. Offer GOOD quality fruit/veggie juice blends WITH NO ADDED SUGARS. Do not substitute inexpensive juices here! Good juice or NO juice. V8 fusions is great and also VRUIT juice. If juice is accepted by your bird it can replace water for the day and replaced with water at night. If your bird never has had juice, start very slow. (A few sips a day every other day. Juice can cause Diarrhea which will cause dehydration. This is very, very bad thing. The beak is always growing. Has it become a little long than normal? be sure there is humidity in the air. Noticeable dryness could be a certain deficiency in diet and should be checked by an avian vet. The beak is a lot like our finger nails. Although it is normal for it to 'peel' a little, dryness and chipping really is not. What ever you do, DO NOT TRY TO FIX IT, FILE IT, or EVEN IT OUT yourself. Only a trained avian vet should do that.
