Grit is good! It helps the bird remove the edible seed from the shell, it too should be mixed with the food. Better than kept sepatate.
what you need to do is call a local pet store or go to one that has cuddle bones for parakeets and put it in a popular spot in the cage so he will file his own beak and you won't eventually have to go to the vet. also the chipping could be caused by lack of calcium in their diet so get calcium enriched food at the store next time and slowly introduce it with their regular food.
i would say that you really need to see a vet for this.
Relax and enjoy him. When he dies, bury him.not before.
Needs calcium and some way to trim his beak. Pet stores sell a white calcium-rich stone you hang on the side of the cage. Your bird will "manicure" his beak on it and get the mineral he needs, too.
i have a parakeet and his beak is dry and cracked but it could be his age but i never really thought there was something wrong but i think we both need 2 ask a vet about this situation cuz this could be very serious.!
