Whats wrong with the suet2007-11-24 17:17:39

My suet is hung, but no birds are touching it! What's wrong?! It's hung under a pine tree, in the shade. I thought that would be the best place. It's been hung there for weeks. No luck!

There may be something the birds know that you don't. For example Copper head snakes love pine trees, because they are very hard to see in one. Your birds may sense one or may even see one. Usually if you do have one in your tree try to look for birds nest or around your suet, thats where he's most likely to be hiding. The same thing happened to me and i had to set a trap for the snake, or if you have cats that will work just as well.

Suet can go sour. It may be that the suet has just gone bad. My grandma used to put out suet regularly, but she always put it on a birch or other thinly branched tree. Something about birds liking to eat where they can see all around them. Pine trees are more for doves and robins, and they don't eat suet. The nut hatches and woodpeckers who like suet prefer deciduous trees.

Plus, it's sort of the wrong season for suet. Suet is more a winter food. In the summer the heat can sour the fat pretty quick. If the suet smells sour, toss it. If not, move it to a different tree, and spread a little peanut butter on it.
