The rule of thumb is to put them out after you see the geese heading back north.

The "old wives tale" was that they rode on the backs of the geese. This thought developed because the hummingbirds were always seen soon after the geese arrived.

Your feeder is the only one that humming birds will come to. They are filling up on the "sugar water" so they can fly to south america/cuba. If you take it out before the winter, they will all die of starvation if you take it out before they fly south. Take it out once you get your first snow fall/frost or when the weather gets below about 35 degrees. Hope this helps!

I am having trouble at the minute keeping my feeder full. Seems that ever couple of days over the last week or two they drink the thing dry. I am guessing they are loading up for the trip south. I'm in Arkansas and I am not seeing any in the late afternoon like before. But the feeder is empty a lot. I guess they are stoping by while I'm at work. I plan to keep filling it up till they quit drinking it up.
