They do both.most birds that were sick would probably land, and sit somewhere to die..however many birds die during migration due to dehydration and exhaustion and may very likely fall out of the sky, especially if they are flying over an ocean and have no where to land.

birds are pretty strong in the wild, and only show signs at the last minute when they are sick (to avoid predators) so by the time they are really sick i dont think they would b flying, they would find somewhere to rest.
Would you go running if you were not feeling well and about to die? Probably not- so I'm pretty sure they're not flying around when they die. As for "looking for a place to die" I don't think that happens either. They have very small brains and operate a lot from instincts. They probably die most in their nests- but I guess they could fall out of trees as well.
birds that are that close to dieing normally don't have the energy to fly so they don't just fall out of the sky. bird will normally die in the mouth of predators,or the nest.
