When can my duckling start to get wet2007-11-24 17:17:40

when should i let my little duckling get wet hes 1 day old.Should i wet him slowly gradually or should i place a bigger dish so it could do it itself? Hes 1 day old now and a little clumsy but cute.

Now is certainly not the time to be letting the little one swim. In the wild, day old ducks do swim, however they are protected by the oils on mom's feathers.

For the time being, you will want to use waterers your little duck can't get into. This is especially important since ducklings are easily chilled when they become wet while still in the "down" stage. The waterer should be wide enough and deep enough for a bird to dip its bill and head.

If you aren't using heat for your ducking, you may want to do that too. A cold duck is a sick duck, which is then a dead duck rather quickly.

Of course it's a duck!!!
put him in the big dish now,you will be there if he needs help
I'd say wet him slowly. And give him more when you see he is trying to swim give him more water.
dude wait til he gets his feathers first. The ones he has now will soak up the water and weigh him down. when he gets his "big bird" feathers (or when he has half of them), then you can introduce him to the water. The "big bird" feathers have a special oil coating to help them float better nd dry quicker.
Day old ducks are already good swimmers. If you live in a warm area then you do not have to worry about him losing heat in the water at all.
