When do I let me baby cockateils go to their new homes
The baby cockateils were hached March 28th, and every two days after that x2. They are eating on there own. I separated them from their parents about 3 days ago, but they really really still like their parents alot. They were still begging for food about 4-5 days ago, but mom and dad were ignoring them and driving me crazy. (That is why I separated them from mom and dad). I have great homes for them, I was thinking that since they are eating, drinking, on there own it should be ok. My only hessitationis that they still get cold at night and huddle together to keep warm. I keep a heater on them (low of coarse) to keep their cage about 80. So if they go to their new homes alone they will be colder.any suggestions from the pro's?
Answers:They are just shy of 8 weeks, typically that is adequate time for them to be weaned. If you are sure they are all eating and drinking on their own then yes it is OK to send them out to their new homes. Yes they do cuddle at night together, but now it is more of a security than anything. At 8 & 7 weeks of age their feathering is more than enough to actually keep them warm. Unless you are living in a very cold temperatured environment and they have reason to be cold. Because they are teedering on the verge of weaning is the reason 4 5 days ago they were still begging for food. If they were completely parent reared and never hand fed you would have not seen first hand that they beg for food, then when you offer them food, they reject it. They think they want it, but really prefer the taste and texture of the new food they have begun to eat for themselves. It's like a baby weaning from a baby bottle. We handfeed babies so we see the process first hand. Watch them for one more week if you like to make sure they are healthy and active. You don't want to sell a bird that is failing to thrive. It's not fair to the client that buys and gets attached to the baby. Good luck with your hobby and if you want great cockateil breeding reading go to www.birdsnways.com and look in the wings of wisdom and there is a ton of information on properly breedng cockateils.
Give them a couple of weeks, if you think they are fending for themselves and have not lost weight then they are good to go.
