When should I breed a Cockateil2007-11-24 17:26:20

I have a boy cockateil, and my friend have a girl one. When should/can I breed (mate) them together?

Answers:

I'm not sure how you'd plan on breeding them since they don't live in the same household and don't know each other at all.just like people just because you have a male and a female doesn't mean that they will like each other in "that way" or at all for that matter! And some birds living together take years to develop a relationship.

If you really are serious about breeding however, I recommend purchasing some books on cockatiel breeding (there are plenty available) in case you are successful and will end up having to raise chicks (prepare yourself hourly feedings from sunrise to sunset if you plan on doing it yourself). Cockatiels become sexually mature around 1 year of age. If you are going to breed these two in particular, I would have an avian-certified vet give both of them a clean slate of health before introducing them to each other and even then, the one that is doing the move to the other person's house should be quarantined for at least 30 days before being introduced to the potential mate.

Cockatiels become sexually mature between 6 and 9 months of age. You should not breed cockatiels until the male and female are at least 12 months old, with a preferable cockatiel breeding age of 18 months.
