Where all the sparrows gone, this seems a world wide situation, in India/ Pakistan as well2007-11-24 17:17:43

I dont see many sparrows flying arrond, it was same in karachi,(pakistan) hyderabd & chennai (india) I wonder if others noticed this too and what may be the reason

Answers:

not only birds but bees are disappearing too.

50 million honey bees have disappeared and our eco system will be affected tremendously as far as pollination goes. There are several theories out there but they actually haven't studied the problem enough to say for sure yet. Global warming is the most popular.

There's loads in my garden and nearby, you can tell by the racket.
there are a million species of sparrows... some of which are now endangered - including a lot of the Indian ones.

the american species, however, i have no idea... it depends which ones and where in the US you are. apparently the common house sparrow in the U.S. is actually in decline - its one of three birds not actually protected by law (probably because they are an introduced species)... but no studies have been done to find out why - they are considered a pest anyway because the kill other birds and break their eggs.

(it has been suggested that sparrow decline in the UK was in line with the introduction of unleaded petrol).

I am currently in Melbourne, Australia, and theres definitely no shortage here

.

I wish i knew as i too had noticed a massive decline in their population over the years, it was suggested that it was due to houses being made more secure through cladding etc that affected the house sparrows in the uk.
House sparrows are noticeably more prolific in my garden (UK) this year, but the decline in general seems to have been going on for quite a few years now.
I have a few pairs nesting in my garden :O) great watching them come and go
They are all in our garden in Gloucestershire along with Starlings that are supposed to be declining in numbers. No shortage of sparrows here.
i noticed that a few years ago that the sparrows were declining just as the starlings are getting more and more around our cities and countryside that could be the answer over population of Stalings and decline of the sparrow
I think it has something to do with the towers for mobile phones which radiate harmful rays.
i live in yorkshire (england) and there is a massive amount of sparrows where i live
