They would buy from different stores, of course in bulk.
Here's one that might surprise you. I had, for a while, a red-tailed hawk (a very BIG hawk, too) living in my home. She had been permanently crippled, but still living and happy. I talked to the Los Angeles Zoo, and they told me of a company called "Nebraska" that sold - you're gonna love this - Bird Of Prey Chow! I swear to God! Well, they have a distributor here in the L.A. area, so I got some of this stuff. It's in the form of frozen ground meat (with other additives) in a roll about 5 pounds I think. It looks just like hamburger. My hawk loved it! Of course, every Friday night was pizza night in my house, so on Fridays she got a special treat - live mice! She REALLY loved that!
So, call your local zoo's avian department. They can tell you the best way to go!
seed from the suppliers, fruit from local markets or suppliers that may have over ripened, stale bread from the bakery and cake.
we have some wonderful patrons of the zoos who seek outside help and patronage be it a cash donation or a tray of stale bread.
