Why do birds stand on 1 leg
They do it because they are going to sleep, that's how all birds sleep usually with their head under their wing as well, or because their feet are cold.
they don't, well most of them don't
apart from flamingos
so they can throw the other one over your shoulder!!
Good question but I think its to keep their leg and feet warm. If you notice they switch off, and they dont do it all the time.
Cos if they stood on no leg they'd fall over.
They are on their feet 24/7. This action lets them rest and relax one completely while they lock the other one in and stand. It's perfectly normal.
It's not unlike you pulling up one leg and resting it on a curb or a bar foot rail.
One leg and foot takes all the pressure while the other one relaxes.
To rest their legs.
Because she has cramp in the other one?..heehee
when i hop i stand on one leg!!
The same reason you walk on yours. lol
same thing can be asked of us, why do we rest most of our weight on one foot at times, to give the other a rest.
Healthy Birds will do this very often and if it's hurt or injured will stand on one foot constantly. A lot of birds will draw a foot up when they sleep.
Its because they like showing off
When I put this question to my parrot,he said I love you very much,so you work it out.
Birds often get cold in their native homes, with only feathers to keep them warm. Birds such as parakeets will lift their leg when cold, partyl to keep warm and (possibly) partly to alert you that they need to be moved from in front of the window or out of the draft.
to keep the other leg warm or something
because if they lift the other leg, they fall down..lol..being serious now, just to keep their leg warm and also is one of their most comfortable poses. its also a way of telling if the bird is healthy (at least with pigeons it is) a sick bird would usually have both legs on the ground and its feather pluffed up.
if some thing bites the leg off, then they got another to stand on.
To rest, to regulate body temperature and conserve heat, and to show that it is content.
So they can keep their feet cosy one at a time and they are also half as likely to get creepy crawlies crawling up their legs if they hold one up.
Hi Ricko
That's a easy one, it's because if they were to take it away, they would fall on their A*SE!
so they don't crap on both of them
if a bird has its head under its wing and stands on one leg it is fit and healty and asleep,it will not fall off because once that foot hits a perch its toes automatically clamp around the perch.
BUT if a bird has its head under its wing and sits on two legs it is not well.
tip of the weekk
any bird showing illness must have heat fast, put inside the airing cupboard or infront of a radiator, the most common cause of death will be dehydration they must drink.
