Why do crows

Why do crows2007-11-24 17:27:01

I live near a small wooded area in the country where crows roost, every evening thousands (not exaggerating) of them gather and fly in cirles around the sky, they also fly in groups towards eachother but never seem to crash. This fascinates us all in the house every evening. Any ideas why they do it??

Answers:

they are catching and eating insects.

they have done it all their lives, and they know how to not wreck into each other.

it is very cool to watch.

how lucky you are to see this all the time!

This is a territory thing
ghosts are the reason.
Are you sure they're Crows and not Rooks?

In Autumn, the young Rooks of the Summer collect together with unpaired birds of previous seasons into large flocks.

Rooks have a call like, "kaah-kaah-kaah". They are distinguished from similar members of the crow family by the bare grey-white skin around the base of the adult's bill in front of the eyes. The feathering around the legs also look "shaggier".

They are mating?
The like to roost for the night in large groups for safety. I agree it is an amazing sight. Bill Oddie has shown it on his bird watching programme. I think they are starlings though
Honestly they are "playing" Crows and Ravens are very very smart birds, are social and enjoy playing games and having fun. What they are doing, that you see, is riding on upward moving air currents, and they gliding.
