Why does he keep tapping the cage2007-11-24 17:27:33

Well the other day I noticed that my parakeet was tapping the cage. Now he has a lot of toys in there he can have fun with, so why does he keep tapping the sides?

Answers:

He may be trying to mimick you. If you are typing or doing something else that produces a clicking/tapping noise, then the bird may want to try and do the same. Birds like parakeets, parrots, and cockatiels are very social animals that follow what the other birds around them do (and they think of their owners as birds). If you eat around your bird you may notice that they start eating too. This could be the reason why your bird is tapping on its cage.

He wants to get out i think. i think thats why. maybe he's bored of his cage and wants to explore!

Mine do that as well. Birds love drama of any kind and if they discover something that seems neat to them they'll do it again and again. (This is why it is very important to never yell or flail around if a bird bites because they'll bite again just for the reaction.) The same goes for strange things that they may do, like tapping the bars of a cage. They'll do it again and again if they like it. :)

I'd love to be able to tell you that simply ignoring it will make him or her stop, but that won't help in this case. This is something that he or she discovered on their own and they'll just keep at it for as long as it fascinates them. Too bad they never seem to tire of noise! :)
