Why does my budgie scratch2007-11-24 17:27:34

Why does my budgie scratch excessively? He is a lutino(completely yellow w/red eyes)Is this common for lutinos? I dont think its lice because i have another bird in the same cage and she never scratches.what could it be?

The scratching can be a number of things it may just be cleanign itself or your budgie may be bored. If this is the case then it is a great idea to go to a cheapie shop (eg. Crazy Clarks or The Warehouse) and buy some toys to put in your budgies cage (mirrors, ladders, balls etc). However your budgie may have lice and it is probably a very wise idea to go to your local pet shop and buy some lice and mite spray to spray both of your budgies with. It is relativly cheap only around $8-10 for a fairly large bottle of spray. You may not already know but there are two different types of lice in which budgies can catch. One of them i dont know to much about but if you buy the lice and mite spray it kills them. The other mite i have recently had to treat all of my 50 mudgies with because one of them was infested with them. It is a pain in the neck to get rid of and is extremely contagous to toehr budgies although a person can not see these signs until after about 12 months that the bird has has them for. The mites common name is 'scaly face' or 'scaly leg'. Like the name suggests it causes the budgies to get excessive scales on their beak and cere which becomes very itchy to the bird. They then scratch their face with their foot and it eventuall transfers into their feet aswell which is called scaly legs. These mites can not be left untreated as the problem will get wrose and worse. The mites actually somehow burry themselves underneatch the budgies skin and that is were they live and breed. This is why it is so hard to get rid of. But if you go and gvet the bird checked out at your vet they will be able to take a skin swab which they will then look at underneath the microscope and will be able to tell you if it is infested with scaly face or not. In the meantime buy a small jar of vaseline and apply it to your budgies feet but don't put too much on the bottom of their feet as it is very slippery and will cause your budgie to slip of their perch. The vaseline is white petroleum jelly which will make it inpossible for the mites to get out of the budgies skin and they will therefore sufficate. I hope this helps you with your problem.

Go get it hcecked up at some vets office. It's probly just itching itself.

It's normal for them to scretch once around every hour or so.

He may have mites. Get some mite spray and watch him closely. Also, if he has just recently molted all of the pin feathers coming in can itch. It's also good for your keet to be sprayed with a water bottle. It's good for their feathers and they often enjoy it.
