Why dont the birds sing2007-11-24 17:27:08

when it's raining?

asked my 4yr old daughter, half an hour ago when we got caught in a downpour!

I said they prob flew to their nests to stay dry, and she said they might still sing in there nests, so why don't we hear them?!

Answers:

Birds seek shelter when it rains and in order to stay warm and conserve energy, they fluff their feathers and stop singing. Birds have to eat constantly in order to stay warm. They eat many times their own weight in food so staying warm is very important. When it pours, they cant seek food and they must stay warm. Singing depletes their warmth. Birds usually have their complicated songs during the mating season, after that their intricate songs are not used but rather a shortened territorial call is used. To make it short.they dont sing to keep warm and save energy.

Because they become inactive when it rains, just like people. People don't usually go outside and sing and play when it is raining.

i imagine they only sing to attract mates or call for other birds so they wouldnt need to in the nest - i dont know.

it be nice to think that birds sing for fun but i think its just communication

I would probably guess that the reason is because they have gone somewhere for shelter (not their nests in branches). or those that haven't are being rained on so their not really gonna be all chirpy about it. although I sing when it's raining.lol

I think they - apart from the drying themselves answer - have instinctively learn't to keep quiet in the trees and bushes, as a means to avoid predators especially, when the rain makes it hard to fly for most, and noise from approaching predators would be shielded by it.
