Why would 2 parakeets not get along in the same cage
They are male and female. Female was with another male for 6 years. The male died last fall so we purchased another male for her. Now the new male pecks at her all the time.
Answers:Here's how you can definitely sex them. The seer (area above beak) is blue on male aged over 6 months. The female is a light pink/lavender and when ready to mate it is brown. If the bird being pecked is not losing feathers, hiding or showing behavior like its been hurt, then nothing is wrong but if feathers are missing and there is a bloody area, then by all means, separate the two birds as soon as possible. I have found from past experience, more trouble from two females than male/female combination. Females have actually killed other females, especially when one was alone in the cage for awhile and another was added later.
M & F parakeets never get on in a cage
if they have different coloured / shaped beaks they wont like living together.
Possibly they are breeding. Cockatiels peck one another when they breed.

the male may have always been alone before. he's trying to be dominate. you should separate them for a while, but put their cages right next to each other. they will get used to each other soon. Are you sure one is a female? Males fight and eventually one will kill the other.
Seperate them - before the male hurts her. We tried to put two conures together and it just got worse and worse. We did put them in seperate cages next to each other - but the male still did not like the female. I think he was jealous of the attention she was getting from me -and he felt he should be the only bird and have all the attention. So, we gave him back where he came from - and everything worked out fine. The female is still alone now.
Personalities or one doesn't find the other attractive (for the parakeets) Just like some two people in a room can't get along.

I think they are mating, mine did that and had 5 kids.
Trying to mate and she doesn't have interest right now. They will eventually get along I had parakeets at one time that acted the same and they got along fine after awhile. I now breed lovebirds and getting a macaw I love birds.
