confusion over budgie egg2007-11-24 17:19:09

I have recently candled a budgie egg which is approx 1 and a half weeks old. I could see sort of vainy lines, but they wern't red, they were black outlined and stoped half way on the egg, so it wasn't clear. Does this sound like a infertile egg or a fertile egg to all you out there?

Answers:

hi

your egg is infertile,sorry.

i breed approx 200 chicks a year but have very few infertile eggs,if the pair are old enough(over 9 months) are fit and shouting for a mate you are half way there.i always use square perches, sometimes then hen cannot grip a round perch during copulation resulting in infertile eggs.

a fit pair caged together with a nest box introduced will lay within approx 8 days and continue laying every other day, then hen will not incubate until the 2nd egg is laid, once the 4th egg is laid(i number them with a felt tip pen)the 1st egg should be fertile,if not i remove it and she will lay a replacement egg.if it is full you will notice the egg going a darker colour,if you candle it( gentle )you will see the red blood( the embryo).hatching date will be 18 days from laying, the chicks will leave the nest at about 4 weeks old and be fully weaned at 35-40 days old.

good luck with your breeding any problems e-mail me.

The egg was probably fertile but has since "died", probably not warm enough for incubation.
If you want your female to lay fertile eggs. One way is to pluck the feathers from the vents on both male & female.
