It may have been an insect called a hummingbird moth. But my guess would be another moth called white-lined sphinx look at the picture at http://www.enature.com/fieldguides/detai.
It was a flying skunk with a bee anntenae's on its head. They are all over down here. Hunting season opens next week for them. Gotta thin them out a little bit. Damn tasty with greens and poke salad.
