a hen is broody when she remains sitting tight, on her eggs in the nest box

she just goes all fluffy and wont get off her nest

she wont budge ,

She gets grouchy, if you try to move her or collect the eggs she is sitting on .

Even a normally placid hen, may peck you when she is broody

As to cockerels , yes you can eat them and very good they are to eat too.

Cockerels used to be traditionally ,used as meat

and hens for laying eggs and rearing chicks .

Yes you can eat cockerels. When a hen is broody she will make a great deal of noise clucking around and running the cockerel. to entice him to mate (not that he really needs much enticement) after which when she lays her eggs she will remain on the nest indefinitely to hatch them.

Usually I lay an egg every day but after a short while I forget about it and go and eat or do some small archaeology. Sometimes I remember why I laid the egg and sit on it all day. I try to make a more comfortable nest and I don't like being picked up very much. I don't like other chickens around me and prefer to be moved into my own house. Sometimes the farmer tricks me and puts a pretend egg in my house. If I am broody I sit on it for ages but nothing happens. If I'm not very broody I just leave it alone.
