how do you take care of a blind bird
I found a site where a blind owl was actually operated on and sight was restored. You may want to check that out. I have never heard, nor read, of any information of how to care for a blind bird. Of course, that does not mean that info isn't out there. Because birds have such a keen sense of smell, I would try feeding the bird cooked sweet potatoes, beans, cooked oatmeal, veggies, etc. When warm, they give off a higher aroma and may help the bird find it's food better. It is healthier eating for the bird anyway. (I am assuming this bird is of a parrot variety, not a carnivore.) Try and get organic foods, as birds are highly sensitive to pesticides.
I would imagine a cage set up with perches that are sitting on the bottom of the cage (like a 'T'). Short enough that it could climb up on, but on the cage bottom so that the bird could find the perch above him/her. The perch stand would have to be secured to the bottom of the cage to prevent toppling over. I work with blind horses, and everyone at the farm knows to constantly talk to them, touch them, so they know where you are. It helps their anxiety and keeps humans from getting tramped on by a larger being than ourselves.(No problem for you here). Also, you may want to contact a zoo and talk to someone who cares for birds there. I can't think of anything else at the moment.
I hope this bird does well.
buy it a mirror.
sorry to hear about your bird. i can't imagine keeping it alive. you would have to make sure the bird knows where to get it's food and water. and never move it around. or you could confuse it and it could turn on you. sorry again
a gray friar bird for company might help
First off. make sure it's wings are clipped ! This will prevent it from trying to fly, and possibly flying into something that will hurt it. Next. just show it lots of love & tlc. Like the above poster mentioned, keep it's food where it knows where it is, and can easily get to it. NEVER move the food & water, or, it's 'favorite' perch. They tend to adapt very well, being blind.. but just make sure nothing is around that it could get hurt with. If it sits with you.always make sure you let it know that you are reaching for it..so you dont spook it. (reach slowly)
