Canarys do not show any outward difference in the sexes but only the male birds sing, both sexes help to make the nest and the male shares the incubation some times. Both birds share the feeding of the young so the only sure method that I know of is the male singing which usually happens when he is calling for a hen to mate.

but i thought one of my birds was a boy for the longest time cuz its sister was laying eggs (they were 2 days apart in age) and then years later it started laying eggs so you may not be able to tell right away

im not sure about canaries but for cockatiels only th adult male can talk so if thats the same then if it talks its a male.

maybe ask a vet or get a book on canaries or go to ur local pet shop and ask

I was going to say where the nostrils are also.but i am not sure if it is the same for all birds.i used to have a pet parakeet, male, that would hump his play rings on the side of his cage ALL THE D@MN TIME.it was entertaining.so i guess you can tell that way..it was definitely a he.

females lay eggs and have duller colors than males. males sing. or ask ur vet about DNA sexing where they send a bird feather out to be tested in a lab and they mail you whether the bird is boy or girl
