how long should a female cockatiel beak grow to, my female cockatiels beak is nearly touching her bo2007-11-24 17:21:39

they have 2 cuttle fish in their cage which they use every day, the male's beak is ok, why has her beak grown so long.

i used to have a male and a female and i was always taking the female to the vets to get her beak and claws cut the male never had to go it was less then a tenner to get both done

I think that all birds beaks grow in all different shapes and sizes..I think that it's fine for right now but i guess if it gets bigger then maybe you need to go to the vet with it

it can be a a symptom of liver disease. I suggest that you take it to a vet for trimming because she will have problems eating if it is too long. Do not attempt to trim it yourself because if you cut the nerve and vein it will be very painful and she will bleed a lot. SOme birds have bled to death.

The beak should not be that long. It needs to be clipped by someone who knows what they are doing because if you clip it too deeply she will bleed. Some birds just have a tendency to have long toe nails and beaks.

if you really like your bird, get it vet checked. It will cost more than the bird cost in the first place. But excessive beak growth is usually a symptom of a health problem. It's not normal for a healthy bird. Make sure you go to an avian vet - a regular vet won't have a clue.
