i have a conure parrot that has turned bad, all he wants to do is bite when you try to hold him or t2007-11-24 17:22:04

i have had him since he was 6 weeks old. he never did this before, he was always loving and fun to play with. he will take food from your hand, but if you go to pick him up or touch him, he will bite. i have tried everything, squirting water on him (he likes water) telling him no, covering him up after he does this.they say, not to flip the beak. i dont know what else to do??

This bird is trying to dominate you, you say he started this at two years of age.This is when most conures reach sexual maturity and they try to dominate thier flock members, to try and be top of the pecking order. You have to show him who is boss by giving him lots of cuddles. Hold him so that he cannot bite and show him that he cannot be your boss. Also if he is not clipped you might consider this as he will become more reliant on you instead of being able to go wherever he wants to. Please do not clip him if you have never done it before have a professional do it, I do it for free for my customers at my store.

Is he or has he been above eye level or sitting on your shoulder.? Its dominance with birds to be above eye level or on the shoulder. also. if you slowing start retraining him like 15 mins 3x a day doing "step ups" and slowing retraining him he shoudl come around. he may also be starting to molt which you shouldnt really pick him up or mess with him too much.they get a little attitude during this time! if you ever need anything else. go to your local petsmart (petsmart NOT petco) and have a bird specialist help you or e-mail me at BabyGyrlNasha@yahoo.com and i'll be glad to help you.
