how long do they have to be together before they start breeding

Answers:

They become sexual maturity at about 9 months old but not really allowed to have young until they are a year old.

They will sit and hatch the chicks but usually the babies will die because the parents haven't learned what to do yet.

The male sits on the eggs during the day and the female at night.

You apparently need to put a nesting box on their cage, and supply nesting materials: I had cockatiels who bred, but I didn't provide a nest, so nothing came of their mating sessions. You can double check on this info, but that is what I read somewhere.

Just by reading your question tells me that you do not know enough to be breeding your birds at this time. Maybe after a ton more research you will gather enough info and be totally prepared when you start to breed them.

Birds, especially cockatiels do not breed commonly in captivity. But cockatiels are usually harder to breed than bigger birds like conures or macaws.

put a nesting box on the side of the cage and nesting materials in the box you'll want access to the inside of the box also..As far as how long it will take before they start breeding i'm not sure i do think that they will have about two cluches of babies per year.. you also need to think about if you want to hand feed the babies or not and also the fact that you will not be able to handle the male and female mates much anymore for they will become unattached to you and attached to each other if you want to hand feed the babies they are worth more money if and when you go to sell them..

Make sure you have a big cage or aviary and put in a couple of parrot boxes. I used to have heaps of cockatiels and they bred like crazy. They normally breed when about 9months old.
