i need help with my parakeets2007-11-24 17:22:26

i have had my parakeets a year. they are in desperate need of their nails being clipped. they arent trained so they are still very much scared of me.please tell me how i can get a hold of my birds to do this without giving them both a heart attack.

Hi, All you need to do is to catch it ,the best way is to use a thick glove or if you don't have one you can use a towel ,make sure that you fold the towel thick , because parakeets bite really hard sometimes breaking your skin,, make sure that when you hold it ,, it need to be face up, take a regular nail clipper and clip the tip of the nail ,you don't want to clip to far up ,but just enough ,so that there nails don't get in the way,,

It's better to take them to a vet or pet store that offers this service.

That way they don't associate you with unpleasantness and wreck all the good work you have put in to taming them.

Also, they have lots of experience. They can do it so that there is less stress and trauma for the little guys.

It be easier if they were tamed. Try a Jersey Glove they usually not bite hard and it be soft. Talk to them and get them used to you reaching into the cage. Then you catch one clip the nails using nail clippers, but, be careful you not clip to far or you get flesh and blood. Some pets shops can do this and it may not cost much, plus you learn how it done. Also, pet shops sell a Sandpaper thing that go around the perch rods and it will keep them trimmed.
