Okay - let's get to the heart of the matter. Yes, they ARE racing pigeons no matter what others say. I've raised them for over 40 years. They are also called homing pigeons and racing homers. Carriers are a show variety of pigeon and they are not extinct. Passenger pigeons, which have nothing to do with domestic pigeons are the extinct ones.

Now, on to your question. Yes, two birds will do what you want them to do and they WILL come back to your loft. However, what you want to do is to start with two squeakers - young birds that are just getting ready to leave the nest and get them used to your loft and the outside, and teach them how to come back in thru the trap, which you will have in your loft.

DO NOT try to settle old racing pigeons, they will almost assuredly just head back to their original home.

I suggest that you might want to go to the American Racing Pigeon Union website at http://www.pigeon.org and ask them to send you a beginner's booklet. It will explain some neat things including how to settle your babies to your loft.

If you actually want a pair of babies, i.e., a male and female. then you can ask the breeder you get them from to breed them from a blue male and a red female. If you get a red bird in the nest, it will be a male, and if you get a blue one it will be a female (From the suggested mating only does this work).

Go have some fun. I started with just the two birds and had a blast for a few years.
