Canaries are great for people who want to hear a bird sing, but they are not very friendly. Your 11 year old will probably want a bird that is a friend. A cockatiel makes an excellent pet. The males can be taught to whistle and even talk a bit. They will ride around on your shoulder, and love being around people. Budgies (sometimes called parakeets, though they are actually not parakeets) would be a second choice.

Look for hand raised birds from a breeder instead of buying one from a pet store. They have already been used to people handling them and are much less likely to bite.

I personally don't like birds, I wouldn't keep one in the house. Their feathers get all over everything, I remember when I was younger my sister had one and it seemed like we were always getting sick and my mom used to complain about the feathers getting all over everyhting. She ended making my sister get rid of it, seemed like we got sick less often and no more feathers all over the place. Hope that helps a little.

A canary is a good bird, but I would think an 11 year old would more enjoy a bird that they could have an interaction with such as a cockatiel, a budgie or a parrotlet. A small parrot can hand tamed to sit with you and would enjoy your company and can even be taught to talk.
