me again parakeets & crackers
I asked about feeding my parakeet a saltine cracker and someone answered back "just make sure it's salt free" Is this true, and why. Thanks everyone for your help.
Answers:Hi Jane,
Too much salt is bad for birds the same way it is bad for humans. One small bite now and then is okay but don't give your parakeet a whole cracker. Even too many salt free crackers are bad.
You should also try to stay away from enriched foods ( like flour used in baking etc.) as it can cause toe tapping in birds. Good Luck!
I gave my parakeet doritos and tortilla chips and I'm sure they are loaded with salt. He was fine, but I didn't make a habit of it. Everything in moderation.
I KNOW IT IS STEREOTYPICAL TO FEED PARROTS CRACKERS, BUT THE SODUIM CAN BE TOO HIGH. THIS IS WHY SALT FREE IS RECOMMENDED. MY BIRDS LOVE WHITE TOAST. THIS CAN BE AN ALTERNATIVE.
Hi
I will tell you that salt free is best and I sure would not do it often.
Birds are very sensitive, and even small amounts of the wrong things can be toxic.
If it were me I just would NOT feed the cracker and instead buy a bird friendly treat instead.
Good Luck

try salt free, or I just brush the salt off.my birds LOVE hot
spicy Doritos.I've given my birds crackers and other crunchy things, for years, just remember to brush the salt off..everything you eat, they can eat Accept chocolate, and Avocado's.(the oil is bad for them) My birds love people food..I think they stay healthier..good luck..
Yes it is true. While all living beings need regulated amounts of sodium in their systems, too much salt can lead to a host of health problems in birds, including excessive thirst, dehydration, kidney dysfunction, and death.
yes it is and i think because its an additive that isn't too healty for them or us. be on the safe side and choose the salt free.but did you know that bread is not good for birds unless its toasted.?
too much salt is bad for any bird. get salt free crackers !!
